Documents for a Purchased Utility Trailer
For a titled trailer, obtain the properly assigned title. For an untitled lightweight trailer, obtain the prior registration and a detailed bill of sale showing seller, buyer, date, price, make, year, VIN/serial and weight. An office can request additional proof when the number is missing or the seller is not the registered owner.
Under 2,000 vs 2,000 Pounds
Florida generally excludes trailers under 2,000 pounds net weight from certificate-of-title law. At 2,000 pounds or more, title is generally required. Net weight is the empty trailer weight, not cargo capacity, gross vehicle weight rating or the combined towing weight.
Out-of-State Utility Trailers
Surrender the foreign title or registration and provide VIN/weight evidence as required. A state that did not title the trailer does not automatically exempt it from Florida’s classification. Ask the office what prior record and VIN verification it needs.
Plate and Decal Display
Mount the assigned trailer plate securely and keep it visible behind ramps, gates, spare tires and loads. Do not use the towing vehicle’s plate or another trailer’s decal. Update toll accounts if the plate can be read separately by cameras.
Private Use vs For Hire
Registration class and fee treatment differ when a trailer is used for hire or in commercial operation. Business use can also trigger carrier, insurance, weight and safety requirements beyond ordinary private utility-trailer registration.
