The official personalized plate check lets users test a proposed configuration. Treat the result as a planning tool, not a reservation. Another application can be processed before yours, and the department still reviews the configuration.
Prepare multiple choices in priority order. Test obvious spacing variants and read the plate-design limit. A configuration that fits a standard passenger plate may not fit a smaller motorcycle plate or a design with fewer available character positions.

Character Limits and Plate Design
Florida plate formats can support different numbers of letters, numbers and spaces. The chosen specialty design, vehicle type and symbol placement affect the available positions. The official application and procedure control the limit.
Why a Personalized Plate Can Be Rejected
The department reviews more than literal profanity. A combination can be rejected when it is obscene, misleading, confusing with an official or emergency designation, discriminatory, sexually suggestive, related to illegal activity, or otherwise prohibited under current standards. Spacing, number substitutions and phonetic readings may be considered.
A plate can also be unavailable because it is already assigned, reserved, pending, conflicting with another series or not compatible with the selected plate type.
How to Apply
- Select the plate design. Confirm that the design is available for your vehicle and can be personalized.
- Check the proposed configurations. Save several alternatives.
- Complete the current official application. Enter choices clearly in order of preference.
- Submit through a county tax collector or license plate agency. Bring registration, identification and eligibility documents for the underlying plate.
- Pay the itemized total. This can include registration, plate, personalized and specialty annual-use charges.
- Use lawful temporary authority while waiting. The office may issue a qualifying temporary plate during manufacture.
Personalized Plate Fees and Renewal
A personalized configuration generally adds an annual fee to normal registration charges. If the underlying design is a specialty plate, its annual-use fee and any processing fee are additional. Exact totals vary by plate and vehicle. Ask the office to separate recurring annual charges from one-time issuance, replacement, service or mailing charges.
Transferring, Replacing or Giving Up a Personalized Plate
A personalized plate remains connected to the plate owner and can be transferred only under the applicable ownership rules. It cannot simply be given to another person. When selling the vehicle, remove the plate and ask the office whether to transfer it to a replacement vehicle, retain it, surrender it or cancel it.
If the plate is stolen, report it before replacement. If it is damaged or altered, do not recreate the design yourself; request an official replacement.
