Quick answer

Ask the dealer in writing for the title-submission date, transaction or control number, reason for delay, current temporary-tag authority and expected correction. Independently check the VIN/title record and dealer license, preserve every tag and document, and do not drive on an expired or altered temporary tag.

Choose the Correct Florida Title Path

Answer transaction questions without entering a VIN, plate, name or account number. The result is a planning path, not title approval.

Build a Complete Timeline

Record purchase date, finance funding, trade-in delivery, temporary tag numbers and expiration dates, insurance start, promised delivery dates and every contact. Save the buyer’s order, retail installment contract, odometer statement, trade documents and payment proof.

Questions the Dealer Should Answer

  • Was the title application submitted?
  • Which county, electronic filing agent or FLHSMV office received it?
  • What is the transaction/control number?
  • Is the prior title missing, branded, held by a lienholder or rejected?
  • What lawful credential covers the vehicle now?
  • Who is the dealership title clerk or compliance manager?

Independent Checks

Confirm the business appears on FLHSMV’s licensed dealer list. Use the VIN on the official vehicle check and review NMVTIS history. Contact the lienholder listed on your contract to confirm funding and title instructions. A dealer-created status screen is not the official state record.

Send a Written Demand

Send a concise letter or email identifying the vehicle, purchase date, temporary-tag expiration, missing credential and requested cure. Avoid threats and state only facts. Request a written response by a reasonable date and preserve delivery proof.

Complaint and Legal Paths

Dealer complaints are generally handled through FLHSMV Dealer Services or the regional office identified for the dealership. Financing, deceptive-practice or contract disputes may also involve the Attorney General, lender, arbitration agreement or private counsel. Use the form and office matched to the dealer license type.

Do Not Compound the Problem

  • Do not alter or photocopy a temporary tag.
  • Do not accept a tag issued to another vehicle or person.
  • Do not cancel insurance while the vehicle is operated.
  • Do not surrender original contracts without copies.
  • Do not stop payments without legal advice and contract review.
