Use the on-page helper to clean and count a proposed configuration, then open Florida’s official personalized plate availability check. A result does not reserve the text or guarantee approval. Character capacity varies by standard, specialty, motorcycle and other plate designs, and the final application is reviewed for conflicts and prohibited content.
Working configuration helper
Prepare a Florida Personalized Plate Choice
Clean and count a proposed plate configuration, then continue to Florida’s official availability checker. The helper does not reserve or submit the text.
Prepare a Personalized Plate Configuration
The helper below accepts letters, numbers and spaces, counts visible characters and opens the official Florida checker. It does not reserve the plate and does not submit an application.
Character Limits Depend on Plate Design
Do not assume every plate accepts seven characters. Specialty artwork, motorcycle plates and other formats can have fewer spaces. Select the exact design first, then confirm its capacity at the office or in the official application instructions.
Available Does Not Mean Reserved or Approved
The official checker is a point-in-time search. Another applicant can submit the same text before your transaction is completed. FLHSMV can also reject a configuration after review even if no current registration uses it.
Understand the Recurring Cost
| Charge | When it may apply | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Personalized plate fee | Custom configuration | Usually recurs with renewal |
| Specialty annual-use fee | Specialty background | Can be added to personalized cost |
| Plate/processing fee | Issue or replacement | Ask for itemized total |
| Registration tax | Underlying vehicle registration | Separate from customization |
Application Process
- Choose the exact plate design.
- Check multiple configurations.
- Prepare two or three backups.
- Complete the official personalized plate application.
- Apply through a motor vehicle service center.
- Use lawful temporary authority while the plate is manufactured.
Why a Configuration May Be Rejected
- Already assigned or pending
- Too many characters for the chosen design
- Confusingly similar to an existing configuration
- Obscene, vulgar, discriminatory or otherwise prohibited content
- Misleading government, emergency or official implication
- Characters not supported by the plate system
Renewal, Transfer and Surrender
A personalized plate remains connected to the registered plate owner, not to a vehicle buyer. It may be transferred to another vehicle owned or co-owned by the plate owner when the official requirements are met. Remove it before selling the vehicle and maintain the registration or surrender/retention status correctly.
Personalized plate capacities and review standards can change by design. Include the exact plate and official application.
