Quick answer

A Florida title transfer generally requires a properly assigned title, buyer and seller information, odometer disclosure when applicable, lien satisfaction, identification, proof of insurance for registration, tax documentation and applicable fees. Private buyers should complete the transfer promptly at a motor vehicle office.

Inspect the Title Before Paying

Match the title VIN to the dashboard and door label. Confirm the seller is the titled owner and that every required owner can sign. Look for erasures, white-out, overwritten mileage, missing lien releases, “and/or” ownership language, branding and reassignment limits.

Walk away from an open title. A seller who never titled the vehicle in their name may be title jumping. Paying cash does not make the ownership defect disappear.

Seller Responsibilities

  • Complete the seller section accurately
  • Enter the buyer’s full legal name and address
  • Record sale date and price truthfully
  • Complete odometer disclosure when required
  • Provide lien satisfaction
  • Remove the Florida plate
  • Keep copies and file recommended notice of sale information

Buyer Responsibilities

  1. Verify the vehicle and title.
  2. Obtain a bill of sale.
  3. Arrange Florida insurance.
  4. Submit the title application promptly.
  5. Pay tax, title and registration charges.
  6. Receive or transfer a lawful plate.
  7. Review the new title and registration record.

Open Lien or Electronic Title

A lienholder may hold the paper title or control an electronic title. Do not rely on a seller’s promise that a lien “will be removed later.” Use a documented payoff and lien-release process. If the title is electronic, ask the office how ownership transfer will be completed.

Out-of-State Title Transfer

An out-of-state title can require VIN verification and additional tax review. Imported, rebuilt, flood, salvage or bonded titles follow separate procedures. Check whether the issuing state requires notarization or additional signatures.

Plate and Registration After the Transfer

The seller’s plate stays with the seller. The buyer can transfer their own eligible Florida plate or receive a new plate/authorized temporary tag. Insurance and registration are separate from the title signature.
