How to Compare Specialty Plates
Do not choose from artwork alone. Verify that the plate is currently active, available for the vehicle type, offered in your county inventory or orderable, and compatible with personalization if desired. Review where the annual-use fee goes and whether it is tax-deductible; the tag office generally cannot provide tax advice.
Annual-Use Fees and Total Registration Cost
The specialty fee is added to ordinary registration taxes and plate charges. Depending on the transaction, the total may also include a personalized plate fee, initial registration fee, replacement fee, county service fee, mailing or online convenience charge.

- Review the recurring cost. Ask which charges will appear at every renewal.

Presale Vouchers
New specialty plates may begin with a voucher phase. Buying a voucher supports the plate’s attempt to meet the statutory presale requirement, but it does not always mean the physical plate is immediately available. Ask what happens if the threshold is not reached, how long the voucher remains valid and how it is redeemed after production starts.
Personalizing a Specialty Plate
Many specialty plates support personalization, but the graphic can reduce the number of available character positions. The configuration must be available and pass department review. The specialty annual-use fee and personalized fee can both apply.
Switching, Replacing or Surrendering a Specialty Plate
Changing from one design to another can create issuance and service charges in addition to the new plate’s annual-use fee. A stolen or damaged specialty plate follows replacement rules. When a vehicle is sold or insurance is canceled, handle the plate under Florida surrender and transfer rules rather than leaving it on the vehicle.
