Florida motorcycles and many trailers require title and/or registration with a plate sized for the vehicle. Fees, documentation and permanent-registration options depend on vehicle classification, trailer weight, use and ownership history. Confirm the exact class before applying.
Motorcycle Registration and Plates
Motorcycles use reduced-dimension plates suitable for the vehicle. The title, registration, insurance/financial-responsibility and endorsement requirements are separate issues. A plate alone does not prove the rider is licensed to operate the motorcycle.
Mopeds, Motorized Bicycles and Autocycles
Classification depends on statutory definitions such as engine displacement, horsepower, speed capability, seating and wheel configuration. A seller’s advertisement is not controlling. Misclassifying a small motorcycle as a bicycle can create registration and licensing problems.
Trailer Title and Registration
Utility, boat, travel, farm, commercial and homemade trailers can follow different title and registration rules. Weight is important, and some trailer categories use permanent registration while others renew periodically. A homemade trailer may need weight documentation and an assigned identification process.
| Vehicle | Check before applying | Common issue |
|---|---|---|
| Motorcycle | Title, VIN, insurance/financial responsibility, endorsement | Buying with missing or altered VIN |
| Moped | Legal definition and engine/speed specifications | Seller labels it “no tag needed” |
| Utility trailer | Weight, bill of sale, prior title/registration | No identification or weight evidence |
| Boat trailer | Trailer registration separate from vessel registration | Confusing boat decal with trailer plate |
| Travel trailer | Title, weight, liens and registration class | Unreleased finance lien |

Plate Display
Mount the assigned plate securely in the designated rear location and keep it readable. Motorcycle plate orientation, frames, bags, fender eliminators and lighting must not obscure characters or the decal. A trailer load, ramp or spare tire cannot block the plate.
Selling or Transferring
The seller removes the Florida plate. Complete the title and bill of sale accurately. A motorcycle plate does not transfer to a trailer, and passenger vehicle plate credit may not transfer across every class without adjustment.
Personalized, Specialty and Disability Options
Some motorcycle plate designs can be personalized within shorter character limits. Specialty availability can differ from passenger vehicles. Florida also has procedures for wheelchair-symbol motorcycle plates and other eligibility categories.
Motorcycle and trailer rules depend on classification and weight. Include specifications and the official procedure.
