Why the Boat and Trailer Are Separate
The boat is identified by a hull identification number and vessel title/registration. The trailer is identified by its VIN or serial and motor vehicle trailer record. A lien may cover one or both, so review the financing documents and releases carefully.
Documents to Obtain
Request the trailer title if its net weight requires one, or its current registration if it is an untitled lightweight trailer. Use a detailed bill of sale that separately identifies the boat and trailer, including sale price allocation, HIN, VIN, make, year and seller signatures.
Trailer Weight Classification
The 2,000-pound net-weight title threshold applies to the trailer, not the combined boat-and-trailer weight. Remove the boat before obtaining an empty certified weight if the office requires one and the manufacturer record is unavailable.
Dealer and Temporary Plate Issues
Florida’s temporary-tag rules include circumstances for vessel trailer dealers. A temporary plate must be lawfully issued to the specific trailer and remain valid. It is not permission to operate indefinitely while ownership documents are missing.
Display and Tolls
Mount the trailer plate so it remains visible when the boat is loaded. Check that guide posts, transom savers and spare tires do not block it. Toll cameras may capture the trailer plate; keep sale and transfer dates to dispute post-sale charges.
Buying Safety
- Compare the trailer VIN with the title/registration.
- Inspect for ground-off or replacement VIN plates.
- Verify the seller owns both boat and trailer.
- Check liens on financed packages.
- Do not accept “boat title covers trailer” as a substitute.
