Florida requires the assigned plate to be securely fastened, clearly visible and free of obscuring material. A frame, tinted shield, reflective cover, spray, hitch, bike rack or cargo can create a violation when it blocks required plate information or interferes with legibility, angular visibility or detection.

The assigned plate must be attached to the correct vehicle, securely fastened, maintained so it can be read and displayed in the required position. The law focuses on practical legibility, not merely whether part of the plate can be seen from directly behind.
License Plate Frames
A thin frame is not automatically unlawful, but it becomes a problem when it covers the plate number, validation decal or other required identifying information. Decorative frames can also bend, shadow or partially hide characters.
- Install the frame and step back at several angles.
- Check daylight and nighttime visibility.
- Make sure mounting screws do not cover characters.
- Remove dealership or novelty frames that overlap plate details.
Tinted, Smoked, Reflective and Clear Covers
A clear shield can still create glare, distortion or angular obstruction. Smoked, mirrored, prismatic or reflective covers are especially risky because they can interfere with human reading and cameras. Sprays or films marketed to defeat photography are not a safe loophole.
Bike Racks, Hitches, Spare Tires and Cargo
A lawful plate can become unlawfully obscured after a rack or load is installed. Test the view after loading bicycles, wheelchairs, trailers or cargo. An accessory manufacturer’s plate relocation kit does not automatically make the location compliant; the plate must remain secure, illuminated when required and assigned to the vehicle.
Flippers, Curtains and Camera-Blocking Devices
Devices designed to switch, flip, hide or obscure a plate, or to defeat electronic recording, create more serious risk than an accidental frame obstruction. Do not install powered covers, rotating plates, opaque shutters or materials intended to defeat toll or law-enforcement systems.
If You Receive a Warning or Citation
- Photograph the installed condition.
- Remove the cover or obstruction promptly.
- Read the exact statute on the citation.
- Keep replacement receipts and corrected photos.
- Use the court process for any dispute.
When the Plate Itself Is Damaged
If a wrap, coating, corrosion, bend or abrasion prevents restoration to the original state-issued appearance, request an official replacement. Do not repaint characters or recreate the plate background yourself.
