At the Time You Discover the Theft
Photograph the empty mounting area, note the last known time and location, and check whether the decal or mounting hardware was also taken. Do not drive simply because the registration is current; the vehicle lacks its assigned display.
Make a Law-Enforcement Report
Provide the plate number, state, vehicle description, VIN if requested, owner identity and circumstances. Obtain the agency name and case number. Ask whether the plate will be entered into stolen-plate systems and how to obtain a report copy.
Replace or Reassign the Plate
Use HSMV 83146 and the official office process. A personalized plate may require confirmation that the stolen configuration has been removed from law-enforcement files before the same characters are reissued.
Protect Against Misuse
Review SunPass/Toll-by-Plate, parking, red-light and property-access accounts. Remove the stolen plate from trusted-vehicle lists and add the new plate only after issuance. Preserve every disputed image and notice.
Insurance and Registration Status
Do not cancel Florida insurance while the registration remains active unless the office has properly canceled, surrendered or transferred the record. Tell the insurer the plate was stolen, not the vehicle, and confirm the updated plate number.

Keep the police report, HSMV application, replacement receipt, new registration, toll disputes and dated photos. These records help separate your vehicle from activity involving the stolen plate.
