Motorhome vs Trailer
A motorhome has its own powertrain and motor vehicle registration. A travel trailer or fifth wheel is towed and follows trailer title/registration rules. A truck camper can be treated differently because it is cargo mounted on a pickup rather than a separately road-registered vehicle.
Ownership and VIN Documents
Bring the manufacturer certificate, title, assigned title, bill of sale, lien information and VIN/serial records. An out-of-state RV may need VIN verification. Match every digit because large RVs can have chassis and body identifiers.
Weight and Registration Class
Trailer weight affects title and registration documentation. Motorhome fees depend on class and registration factors. Do not estimate from brochure “dry weight” when the office requires certified or recorded weight.
Insurance
A motorhome operated on the road needs applicable Florida motor vehicle insurance. A trailer may be covered differently for liability and physical damage. Confirm both towing and parked/storage risks in writing.
Converted Buses, Vans and Trucks
A conversion can require proof of installed living facilities, body-type change, weight and safety compliance. A homemade VIN plate or altered manufacturer label is a serious problem. Ask the title office before investing in a conversion with incomplete papers.
Seasonal and Out-of-State Owners
Florida residency, where the RV is principally operated, sales/use tax, domicile and registration law interact. A mailing address or campground stay alone does not determine lawful registration. Avoid “Montana LLC” or other schemes marketed solely to evade tax without qualified advice.
