Carry the current registration certificate or other proof accepted by Florida law and official guidance. Confirm that the plate, vehicle and expiration match. A title copy, bill of sale or insurance card does not automatically substitute for registration.
What the Registration Shows
The certificate commonly identifies the registered owner, vehicle, plate, class and expiration. Review it after a transfer, renewal, address change or replacement. A mismatch can cause toll, insurance and law-enforcement problems even when the payment was completed.
What to Carry in the Vehicle
Keep the current certificate in a secure, accessible place. Do not leave the title in the vehicle. Maintain separate proof of Florida insurance for vehicles subject to insurance requirements. For leased, fleet, rental or commercial vehicles, the operator may have additional company documents.
Digital Copies and Portal Screens
A phone image is useful backup but should not be assumed to replace every legally required original or accepted electronic credential. Screenshots can be stale or edited. Verify current Florida law and agency instructions, and keep the official transaction receipt while waiting for mail.
If the Certificate Is Wrong
Do not edit the paper. Compare the VIN, plate, owner name, class and expiration with the official record. Contact the issuing office for correction. If the wrong plate is associated with the record, stop and resolve it before driving or transferring the vehicle.
Traffic Stop or Crash
Provide documents safely when requested by an officer. Do not reach suddenly into a glove box. After a crash, share only the information required with the parties, insurer and law enforcement; avoid posting full registration or insurance cards publicly.
After Selling or Trading the Vehicle
Remove your plate unless an authorized transfer procedure applies, file the appropriate notice of sale, keep title and bill-of-sale copies and verify the vehicle is no longer tied to your active registration. Do not leave your registration certificate in the sold vehicle.
