Quick answer

Use the current HSMV 82040 title application, manufacturer’s certificate or properly assigned prior title, sale/tax evidence and VIN documentation. Do not select an OHV type merely because a seller calls the machine a UTV or side-by-side; use the statutory vehicle definition.

Answer transaction questions without entering a VIN, plate, name or account number. The result is a planning path, not title approval.

Florida OHV Categories

The title application recognizes all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), recreational off-highway vehicles (ROVs) and off-highway motorcycles (OHMs). Width, seating, steering, tires and design affect classification. Marketing terms such as “UTV” are not always the legal category.

Original and Transfer Documents

A new machine generally uses a manufacturer’s certificate of origin and dealer documents. A used machine should have a properly assigned title when one was required. Include bill of sale, tax evidence and owner identification. Out-of-state records may require additional review.

VIN Problems

Inspect the VIN on the frame before purchase. Avoid machines with a number ground off, restamped, covered or inconsistent with documents. A replacement VIN decal or assembled-from-parts machine follows a specialized procedure.

Street Use and Low-Speed Vehicles

An OHV title is not a license plate and does not convert the machine into a low-speed vehicle. Street operation depends on vehicle classification, equipment, local authority and registration law. Do not rely on an out-of-state plate kit or seller promise.

Where the Vehicle May Be Used

Public OHV areas, private property, county roads and state roads have different rules. Check the land manager and local ordinance for age, helmet, supervision, sound, permit and route restrictions.
