Register in the new state under its deadline, keep proof of the new credential, then return or surrender the Florida plate when required before canceling Florida insurance. Do not cancel coverage first while the Florida plate remains active.

Build a Florida Tag or Title Document Checklist
Select a transaction. The checklist stays in your browser and does not collect names, VINs, plate numbers or document images. An office can require additional evidence for the actual record.
This is a planning list, not an official approval. Verify the current form and originals/certified-copy rules with the processing office.
Before You Move
Confirm whether the Florida title is electronic, whether a lienholder holds it and what the destination state requires. Request a paper title early if the new state needs one. Update mailing information so notices and title documents are not sent to the old address.
Register in the New State
The destination state controls residency deadlines, VIN inspection, emissions or safety testing, insurance and taxes. Keep copies of the new registration, plate receipt and title application because Florida or your insurer may request evidence.
Surrender the Florida Plate
Florida plates remain state property and should not be discarded casually. Return the plate to an authorized Florida office or follow the approved mailing/surrender method. Obtain a receipt or other proof showing the plate was canceled or surrendered.
Coordinate Insurance Carefully
Florida can suspend a driver license or registration when required Florida insurance is canceled while an active plate remains on the record. Arrange new coverage and plate surrender in the proper order. Ask both insurers for written effective dates.
Financed and Leased Vehicles
A lender or lessor may control title delivery and require notice before an interstate move. The destination state may issue registration-only credentials while the out-of-state title remains with the lienholder. Do not pay an unofficial service to “convert” the title.
Keep a Move File
- Florida plate-surrender receipt
- New state registration and insurance
- Title or lienholder correspondence
- Florida cancellation confirmation
- Moving date and address update
- Any tax or inspection receipts
Requirements can change by record and transaction. Include the official page, form number, office response and effective date when reporting an update.
