Florida fatal crashes are commonly associated with interacting factors such as speed, impairment, distraction, failure to yield, lane departure, non-use of restraints and the vulnerability of pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists. Official sources should be used for the year and subgroup because no one factor explains all traffic deaths.
“Cause” Is Often the Wrong Statistical Word
A crash report may code several contributing circumstances: a driver can be speeding, impaired and distracted while a roadway is dark and wet. A later investigation, court case or insurance review may reach a different legal conclusion. For data reporting, “contributing factor” is usually more accurate than “the cause.”
Speed and Aggressive Driving
FLHSMV and FDOT reported that speeding contributed to nearly 10% of Florida traffic fatalities between 2019 and 2023. Speed increases stopping distance, reduces reaction time and raises impact energy. The danger is not limited to exceeding the posted limit; driving too fast for rain, congestion, curves or visibility can also be unsafe.
Alcohol, Drugs and Fatigue
Impairment includes alcohol, illegal drugs, cannabis, prescription medication and over-the-counter products that reduce safe driving ability. FLHSMV’s preliminary 2024 distracted-driving information reported nearly 300 deaths and more than 2,200 serious bodily injuries connected to distracted drivers. Distraction includes visual, manual and cognitive attention loss; a phone is only one possible source.

Vulnerable road users have little or no protective vehicle structure. FLHSMV reported more than 10,200 pedestrian-involved crashes, more than 779 pedestrian deaths and more than 1,431 serious bodily injuries in 2023. A category can represent a smaller share of total crashes but a much larger share of severe outcomes.
Seat Belts, Helmets and Ejection
Restraint use does not prevent the crash itself, but it strongly affects injury severity. Analysts should distinguish the factor that contributed to the collision from the factor that affected the outcome. Motorcycle helmet information and passenger-vehicle restraint information also need separate treatment because laws and exposure differ.
Roadway, Lighting, Weather and Emergency Response

A Better Prevention Framework
Florida safety programs use a combination of engineering, education, enforcement and emergency response. A serious data page should avoid implying that one slogan or one enforcement action can eliminate every fatality.
