Crash Events vs Vehicle Involvements
Suppose a pickup hits a motorcycle. The database records one crash event but at least two vehicle units: one pickup and one motorcycle. A table of vehicle involvements can therefore total more than the number of crashes. This is not an error; it is a different unit.
Commercial Vehicles Need More Than Body Type
A large truck may be a commercial motor vehicle, but some commercial operations use passenger-style vehicles and some heavy-looking vehicles may not fit a specific regulatory category for the trip. For safety analysis, check the CMV indicator, vehicle configuration, cargo body type, hazardous-material fields and carrier information rather than using body style alone.
Motorcycles, Bicycles and Pedestrians
Motorcycles are motor vehicles, while bicycles are treated as vehicles for many traffic-law purposes but are commonly reported as a separate vulnerable-road-user category. Pedestrians are people, not vehicles. A “vehicle type” article should not place pedestrian counts in the same column without labeling the unit.
