Florida law requires the state-issued registration plate assigned to the vehicle to be displayed as directed. Florida offers electronic transactions and digital proof of a driver license, but those are not the same as an officially issued digital license plate for ordinary vehicles. Do not replace, cover or electronically switch the assigned plate with an aftermarket display.
What “Digital Plate” Can Mean
The phrase is used for electronic display hardware, a digital image stored on a phone, dealer e-filing, electronic titles and mobile driver credentials. Only a plate actually authorized and issued under Florida registration law can serve as the vehicle’s legal plate.
Current Florida Display Requirement
Section 320.06 describes issuance of registration plates, and section 316.605 governs physical display, height, placement and readability. A screenshot, printed paper copy or LED panel is not a substitute for the assigned plate.
Digital Driver License Is Different
Florida law allows digital proof of a driver license or identification card through an authorized credentialing system. That credential identifies the person; it does not identify and register the vehicle.
Electronic Titles and Online Renewal
Florida can maintain titles electronically and accept certain registration transactions online. The electronic record supports the physical credential and government database; it does not authorize a homemade digital plate.
Switching and Obscuring Devices
Florida’s 2025 law separately prohibits devices designed to switch, flip, hide, cover or interfere with plate legibility or recording. Marketing a device as “privacy technology” does not make it lawful.
How to Evaluate Future Programs
Look for a current FLHSMV announcement, enabling statute, approved vendor list, fee schedule, privacy terms and instructions for law enforcement recognition. A vendor press release alone is not enough.
Requirements can change by transaction and record. Include the exact official error, form or procedure when reporting an update.
